Reflections: Module 4

TRUST! A crucial factor to the success of any group, online or face to face. Trust is necessary in order to facilitate  communication and communication is effective when members trust one another and the tutor. The two things, trust and communication are co-dependent on each other.
The students must feel a certain level of trust among themselves in order to effectively share their thoughts and ideas and to stimulate discussion. This is achieved by  sharing of a bit of the personal side of themselves.
The tutor most certainly must create  that level of trust between him/herself and the students in order to have a successful group that maintains its goals and stays on task. He/she is pivotal to ensuring the students are guided through the course. Hence he/she must demonstrate an openness to listen to and respond to the students, be able to guide and stimulate thought and also exhibit a bit of their personal life in order to have that human element injected into mentoring online. At the same time, he/she must do all this without appearing to be an external expert but rather a part of the group. Challenging isn't it? I have a lot to bear in my mind as i become an online tutor but i am up for the task, after all, don't we do some of this everyday at school?
